M: What do you do in your free time, May? Still like drawing pictures?
W: No. I like taking photos now.
W: Are you going to the concert tonight? It must be a big hit this year!
M: Of course. I can’t miss it.
W: I’ve got a two-week break coming up. Why don’t we take a trip to somewhere cool and sunny?
M: OK, since we went to Australia last year and Singapore the year before, how about Italy this year? We can enjoy the sunshine and the beach there.
W: Sounds great!
M: Why did you miss class yesterday, Janet? We were looking forward to your presentation.
W: Yesterday? I was preparing yesterday. I’m here to give the presentation today. I spent all day – Tuesday - preparing it.
M: Janet, today is Thursday.
M: It’s a lovely day out today, isn’t it?
W: It’s beautiful. Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s supposed to get cold tomorrow.
M: What’s the weather forecast for tomorrow?
W: It’s supposed to snow early tomorrow morning, and then tomorrow afternoon, there’s a chance of freezing rain.
M: That doesn’t sound pretty.
W: Wow, what a cool car! The style is appealing.
M: Yes, it’s beautiful, isn’t it?
W: How much does this car cost?
M: 500,000 yuan. What a deal! That will of course include tax, license and registration fee.
W: I appreciate your help, but I think I will look around.
M: Have you heard about Michael’s new home? It’s in one of the most expensive areas.
W: Is he living in the new housing estate in Kidlington?
M: No, he’s living in an old house in Warston.
W: Do you mean the one near the health center on Old Slate Road?
M: That’s the one.
W: His house must be worth millions! That is one of the most beautiful areas in Oxford. The surrounding area is really peaceful, and getting into the city center from there is very convenient. How can he afford that place?
M: He didn’t. His grandfather died recently and left him loads of money.
W: Did he know that his grandfather was so wealthy?
M: No one in the family expected to get a dime from him. It was quite a surprise.
W: What a lucky man!
M: How can I help you?
W: I’d like to send this package to China.
M: Would you like to send it surface or airmail?
W: What’s the difference between surface and airmail?
M: If you send the parcel with surface mail, it will take about 2 months to arrive, whereas with airmail, it will arrive in 7-10 days.
W: That’s a big difference. I suppose airmail will be much more expensive.
M: That depends on the weight.
W: How much will it cost to send it airmail?
M: Place it on the scale, please.
M: That’s 500 grams. It will cost 10 pounds for airmail.
W: That’s not bad. I’ll do that then. Does that include insurance or is that a separate fee?
M: That’s separate. It’s another 50 p.
W: So, how was your flight?
M: Oh, it was fine. But we had to check in very early this morning at Frankfort airport.
W: Yes. Airport security takes such a long time these days. How’s the hotel?
M: Very nice! Thanks for making the reservation for me!
W: My pleasure. Is this your first time here?
M: Not in London but the first time in your company, and we’re very interested in your products.
W: How long are you staying in London?
M: A week. What shall we do during the weekend?
W: Do you like football? You know, soccer.
M: Yes, very much.
W: Would you like to see a Chelsea match this weekend? I could get you tickets.
M: Thank you. That’s a great idea!
W: You’re welcome. By the way, I’ve made a reservation for lunch for you and Diana at a French restaurant near here. Is that OK?
M: That sounds great!
M: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Craig Wright and this is Listening to Music, the most basic course that the department of music has to offer. Its aim is to teach you how to listen to music. Wait a minute, you say. That’s ridiculous. I listen to music all the time. You are probably right. But I believe that perhaps you are not getting the most out of your listening experience. I’m going to teach you a lot by using the patterns of classical music in here: Mozart, Bach, Beethoven. What I’m trying to accomplish with regard to this particular course is, well, maybe two things. One: change your personality. I want you to become a richer and broader person by teaching you a deep understanding of classical music. And second: if I’m successful in my teaching, I will impart a love of classical music to you. Here is our agenda. The first three or four weeks or so we’ll be following the elements of music: rhythm, melody and harmony and then a test. Next, we will deal with the single most important thing when we listen to any piece of music, and that is the music form. And then toward the end of the course, we will turn to musical style. Requirements. You’ve got a couple of tests here. We have to write a short music paper. We’re all going to go to a concert.
